President Mamnoon Hussain and President of Maldives Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom have agreed to support each other for the non-permanent seat of UN Security Council.

President Mamnoon Hussain and President of Maldives Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom have agreed to support each other for the non-permanent seat of UN Security Council.
This was agreed between the two dignitaries during meeting at the Aiwan-e-Sadr on Wednesday.
President Mamnoon Hussain has said both Pakistan and Maldives have played a proactive role in making SAARC a model of regional cooperation, based on the principles of sovereign equality.
The President stated that Pakistan is aware of Maldives’ concerns on climate and environmental issues and is willing to cooperate on these issues bilaterally with Maldives as well as under the ambit of SAARC. The two dignitaries also agreed to closely coordinate with each other at the SAARC platform.
President Mamnoon Hussain stated that Pakistan attaches high importance to its relations with Maldives noting that relations between the two fraternal countries are characterized by cordiality, mutual respect and commonality of interest. The President said the visit of President of Maldives would prove to be an important milestone in bilateral relations of two countries. The President emphasized on exchange of high level visits between the two countries on regular basis.
The President highlighted that the bilateral trade between the two countries is below its true potential and that efforts should be made to increase the same. The President said that Pakistan is interested in the export of mangoes and rice to Maldives. The President apprised that Pakistan has recently signed an agreement with Sri Lanka to establish shipping lines. Once set up, feasibility of extending that communication link to Maldives can be looked into, stated the President. The President also emphasized on expanding bilateral cooperation in the fields of tourism, education, culture and sports between the two countries.
Speaking on the occasion, President of Maldives Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom said that his country wants to enhance cooperation with Pakistan in various areas particularly in agriculture and pharmaceutical sectors. He also thanked President Mamnoon Hussain on according warm hospitality.
The President stated that Maldives could take advantage from investment friendly policies of Pakistan and may explore investment opportunities in different sectors of the country. The President said that Pakistan will continue to provide training courses to the Maldivian diplomats in its Foreign Services Academy adding that Pakistan also regularly offers seats in its educational institutions to students from Maldives. The President also appreciated Maldives’ consistent support to Pakistan’s candidatures for UN and other international bodies.
The President apprised that operation Zarb-e-Azb is progressing successfully against terrorists which has produced positive results. The President emphasized that the operation is taking place indiscriminately against all terrorists.
The President stated that Pakistan is desirous of peace in Afghanistan and supports an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned reconciliation process. He said that Pakistanwants a constructive, sustained and result-oriented dialogue with India on all issues of mutual concern.Underlining the importance of Pakistan-China relations, the President said that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and its related projects symbolize the people-centric approach of the two countries.
Expressing concern at recent developments in Yemen, the President stated that the crisis, if not resolved, could plunge the region into turmoil. Reiterating support for Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, the President called for finding a peaceful resolution of the crisis through dialogue.
After the meeting, President Mamnoon Hussain also hosted state banquet in honour of his Maldivian counterpart. On the occasion, children also presented bouquets to President and First Lady of Maldives.
Earlier, upon arrival, President Mamnoon Hussain warmly received President of Maldives at the main entrance of the Aiwan-e-Sadr.
